a flippin nightmare

Charlie arrived home at 4:00 this afternoon. William has been sick to his stomach every 10-15 minutes since that time and Elizabeth has been sick to her stomach at almost the exact same time as her brother. As soon as he starts - she starts. Or vice versa. These poor kids have been violently sick for the past seven hours. They are sweating profusely, throwing up what appears to be blood and unable to sleep.

I don't remember them ever being as sick as they are right now.

Thinking hard. Thinking hard.

No, this one definitely takes the cake.

Once we tucked all the kids in to bed, Charlie and I retreated to the living room to fold several loads of laundry. During our folding, we were trying to figure out when and where the kids could have picked up this virus. Although I think it probably came from an outing that we took yesterday to the Nature Center, Charlie thinks that they have food poisioning from a pre-sliced bag of organic apples I bought yesterday from Costco.

While Charlie was working through what the kids ate while they were out today, he realized that William and Elizabeth were the only two that had eaten apples. They were so hungry, they actually ate both bags of apples, by themselves.

"So, what you're telling me is that you think they got sick from the apples?"

"Yeah. That's what I'm saying. I just know that those flippin apples are what made them sick."

With that, my husband took out the box of pre-sliced apples from the refrigerator that I had just bought yesterday and slam dunked them in to the trash.

"Whoa tiger! Hang on a second. You have NO IDEA if the kids got sick from eating apples. Currently, only two members of our family are sick and although you may believe that is enough evidence, until 24 hours pass and we can see whether or not anyone else falls ill, you have nothing more to support your theory. By the way, do you have any idea how expensive pre-sliced organic apples are? They're two flippin bucks a bag so you need to get those apples out of the flippin trash post haste."

Charlie dug the apples out of the trash and while he was putting them back in the refrigerator, he happened to see that water was dripping out of our icemaker. He pulled open the door on the adjoining freezer and noticed that the temperature had risen to 50 degrees.

As we unloaded all of the food that I had just bought from our inside freezer to our outside freezer, I could hear my husband mumbling about the flippin appliances that are always flippin failing on us. But just then, the kids were sick again and Charlie was distracted from the flippin appliances long enough to launch in to another attack on the flippin apples.

I have no idea what to think. Thus far, no one else shows any signs of being sick so maybe this is food poisioning. Regardless, I hope it will be limited to only two because I don't think I could handle any one else throwing up every 10 to 15 minutes.

Oh, and did I mention all of our ice cream melted?

Flippin great.

I'm off to bed.

I just know it's going to be a long night.

  3. I hope your kiddos are better soon. Food poisoning, especially if you're actually seeing blood (not entirely sure if you're joking) can be really serious, though. Are they going to the doctor today? Best of luck - dealing with sick kids is so hard.

  6. Just wanted to wish you all a quick and speedy recovery -- whether it be a virus or food poisoning.

  7. I'll sit with Charlie in the apple corner. ONLY b/c it wouldn't mean a virus and food poisoning is shor-lived.

    .....fingers crossed.....

  8. Would definitely throw away the apples. They've had problems with salmonella in bagged salad/spinach. And there was also that problem with Naked juice. Originally the juice was sold as not pasteurized, but since a bout of salmonella they now "flash" pasteurize. A month ago Sheppie (3yrs) discovered the thermostat control in the refrigerator. Most of it was cool to the touch, but still threw almost everything out....
I'm so sorry! Poor babies! -

  9. Don't throw away the apples - take them to a health authority and get them tested for salmonella so it can be proved or disproved and hopefully save others from the same thing! Kids should be tested for the same so treatment can begin. Salmonella can be very serious.

  10. Wow, I'm so sorry!!! I hope it's just food poisoning, but it must be pretty alarming for everyone out in San Diego who's kids and elderly are getting sick right now, considering this whole "Swine Flu" hype that's going around. We live about 6 hours North & have been advised NOT to go to San Diego for anything right now. I know it's effecting other places/states too, but it's scary stuff!!!

  11. You may want to go ahead and take them to the doctor. Many food poisonings are short lived, but many will continue for days and days. My cousin was sick for two weeks when she was diagnosed with Salmonella about three years ago.

If in the end you do actually think they were
"poisoned" by the apples, you should keep the bags you still have and place a call to your family doctor.

When my cousin was diagnosed with her bout of salmonella the CDC was contacted by their doctor by law and they went and inspected the restaurant where it was believed she ate a touchy burger. Luckily with her it seemed to be an isolated incident, but who knows how many people have gotten sick from the apples. The more reported, the more likely something will be done about it.

Of course this is all just IF they were sickened by the apples.

  12. Their symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced when I got food poisoning a few years ago. Vomiting every 10-15 minutes for around nine hours straight. Sweating. Abdominal cramping (probably from puking my guts out). Wanting to die. Had it all. It was awful. Not that I hope your little ones have food poisoning, but here's hoping they have food poisoning. That way the rest of your family is spared. *fingers crossed*

  13. It sounds like food poisoning based on how badly they're sick to their stomachs. If it is food poisoning often the throwing up will stop just as quickly as it came.

  14. Praying for you. There is little worse than very sick, throwing up children...

  15. I would probably toss the apples, or at least rinse before eating. I tend not to buy bagged/prepped produce anymore after the spinach salmonella outbreak...G'luck
