my true calling in life

After all the years that I spent in college and graduate school working for my BS and then MS degree... the tremendous effort exerted to obtain my state registration ... the years and years it took me to reach this level in my career ... today ... while I was sitting in an important business meeting forecasting the budgets that will be required for environmental compliance on the 35 service stations I manage in San Diego ... all I really wanted to do was finish the conversation I had started with one of my consultants regarding how to get his eight-month old daughter to sleep through the night.

The rest of the stuff that we were discussing?

Meaningless.

COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS.

I'm thinking that it might take more time than I expected to transition back in to this whole "working" thing.

  1. Jen, I know people have written to you about writing a book. Why don't you pursue it? If helping people help their children is your passion, why not?

You have such a way with words and so many great stories to share, I think you could do it!

  5. Amen and amen. I LOVED loved loved teaching like it was the air I breathed. But ever since I started staying home with my kids I have absolutely NO desire to go back. It's my new O2 and I love it like crazy.

  6. Jen - I feel exactly the same way! I have been "offered" a new job I can't refuse that will use the skills I learned in business school 10+ years ago...and all I can think is, "I actually have to use my brain and be eloquent?" SCARY thought but maybe its time to clean out my cobwebs that formed during IF treatments, pregnancy and being around twin 18 month olds!

    Hang in there!

  7. But it so much more fun to get a baby sleeping through the night than saving Southern California from environmental disaster. :) How are we ever going to step back and not butt in when our kids have kids??????? Our daughter-in-laws are going to HATE us!

"I don't CARE if your mother had triplets and knows everything. I wish she would just SHUTUP! If I want to be up 20 minutes all night long, that's MY business! We are moving across country!"

  8. I am right there with you. I to have a BS and MS degree and I work part time. I love my schedule and it works well for my family but I struggle sometimes with getting and staying focused on "work" issues. Shhh don't tell my boss! Oh and I love Michele S comment too. Thanks for your honesty.

  9. Perhaps all that education and the job ain't that important, after all! :D

P.S. Years ago, I wanted to start and run a nursery school and commune, sorta, for little kids. After I found out about all the government regulation, I chose retail sales, where I could serve kids and their moms in a different way. :) Being a clerk in a toy store is alot less stressing than dealing with the government rules and regulations. :)
