The upside of five-years-old is that the children are fully capable of dressing themselves.
The downside of five-years-old is that the children are fully capable of dressing themselves.
And usually, they insist upon it.
Which inevitably means that whenever we step foot outside of our house, I feel compelled to explain to anyone who shoots me a funny look ...
... That I had absolutely no part in accessorizing.
They look great and very original.

OH! Hey! Did you get new car seats?? Is that the Nautilus? What do you think of them over the MAs?
ReplyDeleteToo funny! It took me a while - but eventually, I realized EVERY parent knows that the child dressed themselves - cause their kids have done the same.
ReplyDeleteI always love when you can tell that a kid had a hand in dressing themselves. I say kudos to you for allowing them to express themselves that way. After all, it's only clothes. As long as they are appropriately dressed to deal with the weather, who cares if it's a stripes on spots day!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter does this as well! I swear that I am going to make her some stickers that say "I dressed myself today!" to wear on those particularly crazy days.
ReplyDeleteI love that your 5 year olds are still harnessed in Graco Nautilus' - we have one as well. Could you please raise the harness straps (they should come from above the child's shoulders in a forward facing seat) and tighten them up a bit?
Thanks!
I love to see your kids still harnessed. We have the same seat and just took my almost 6 year old out of the harness because it wasn't fitting tight enough over winter coats. But I have always felt that I am the only one to keep a child harnessed that long. Good for you! Oh and we have the same "style" issues here too. I just go with it, I think it is entertaining to see what they think works. My 3 year old is the most creative and causes me the most laundry!
ReplyDeleteWell, you gotta hand it to them all for choosing a theme!
ReplyDeleteIt's the 1980's come back to haunt you!
ReplyDeleteI can SOOOOOOOOO relate to this!! There are some mornings when I have to make sure their preschool teacher knows I didn't choose the outfit:)
ReplyDeleteAnon @ 5:33: That was the first time the kids have been in those car seats in almost a year. We bought them for Charlie's truck to transport the kids to/from Montessori. Our primary child transporting vehicle is our van - and in the van - the kids still ride in their Britax marathon carseats, which I adore. And the kids tend to like more too - since when they fall asleep, the seats are more reclined and their heads don't bob.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on adjusting the shoulder straps. We'll look in to that...
too cute!!! i think they look very stylish, actually. :-)

ReplyDeleteAt least William's headband matches his shoes. Colour coordination is a great skill to have at age 5 when dressing oneself!
ReplyDeleteNo fair! You got to wait until 5!?
ReplyDeleteI've taken to dressing my three-year-olds for daycare at night and letting them sleep in their school clothes. They're more open to reason at bedtime than in the morning.
Its a kid thing...my daughter does that too. I don't even explain, I'm just happy not to have to pick out clothes anymore. She does have a great bohemian look to her though. Today she's wearing pants, a skirt, a shirt and a belt over her shirt with "bumpit" hair all frizzy curly. And winter boots. :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. Don't shoot me, but we don't even wear seatbelts in Northern AK...as a matter of fact, my 13 year old sometimes drives us to and from school. (In the city though, my 6 year old 60 lb 4'4" tall daughter still sits in a booster.)
Amanda looks like she is related to Madonna, so I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteSorry, run it by me again .... what's wrong with what they are wearing? (well, apart from William's hairband anyway!). Good job kids!
